Chinese automaker Changan is Continental’s first customer for its new generation of electronic brake systems for Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
The Chinese market debut marks the first time that the MK 120 ESC has entered series production worldwide, Continental says.
Production of the new system will take place at the German technology company’s Shanghai plant.
One of the ‘Big Four’ automakers in China, Changan expects its sales to reach 2.8 million units in 2023, its Chairman Zhu Huarong said at the start of this year.
“We are developing new brake systems to meet the needs of trends like electrification, assisted and automated driving,” said Dennis Fritsch, Head of Continental’s Active Safety and Controls Segment.
“Our MK 120 ESC guarantees high active safety performance and provides comfortable driving experience. The worldwide first market entry with our brake system at Changan is an important milestone for us.”
Changan will equip its Oshan X5 Plus and Uni-T models in its domestic market with Continental’s brake system. It is targeted toward passenger cars for global manufacturers.
Continental has earmarked locations in Europe, Japan and India for further production, which is expected to follow at a later date.
Features of the MK 120 ESC brake system include cybersecurity and over-the-air (OTA) update functionality.
